Environment Minister ensures landfill fire management is proceeding well

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Minister of Environment, Moh Jumhur Hidayat, has ensured that the handling of fires at landfill sites (TPA) is ongoing and that firefighting efforts are proceeding well.

“It has been resolved,” said the Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Jumhur when met at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday.

He stated this when journalists sought confirmation regarding reports of 31 landfills burning out of approximately 512 landfills located in Indonesia. Regarding the incident, he ensured that the dozens of landfills that had previously caught fire are now in a safe condition.

When asked further about the Galuga landfill in Bogor, West Java, which recently caught fire, the Minister of Environment also mentioned that the situation is currently under control.

“The fire was extinguished three to four days ago,” he said.

In response to the landfill fires and to anticipate a more extreme dry season, Minister Jumhur subsequently signed the Minister of Environment Circular Letter Number 11 of 2026 concerning the Enhancement of Preparedness and Anticipation of Landfill Fires during Conditions of Extreme Heat.

In this Circular Letter, the Ministry of Environment/BPLH requests regional heads and environmental agencies to implement several landfill fire prevention measures, including periodic wetting and monitoring landfills through regular patrols.
