Indonesia’s Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to halt open dumping practices at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java. The provincial government has stated its readiness to comply with the directive.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the province has already implemented the central government’s instructions, particularly for Zone 4A at Bantargebang.

“For Zone 4, we have already implemented what the Environment Minister directed,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

Pramono explained that open dumping practices in Zone 4A have been discontinued. Other zones, however, continue to operate to accommodate waste from Jakarta.

“For Zones 2 and 3, we will continue operations, but as the Minister directed, we are not conducting open dumping in Zone 4A,” he said.

Additionally, the Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing plans to build a waste-to-energy power plant (PLTS) at the Bantargebang site. The project is estimated to require approximately 8 to 10 hectares of land.

“Bantargebang will be designated for a waste-to-energy power plant that will operate there, and for that we need roughly 8 to 10 hectares of land,” he explained.

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq previously described the landfill collapse at Bantargebang as a wake-up call for the Jakarta Provincial Government to abandon open dumping waste management methods. He urged all parties to reform their practices.

“This incident should not have occurred if waste management was conducted according to regulations. The Bantargebang TPST must be a lesson for all of us to improve immediately, for the sake of human safety and environmental preservation,” said Environment Minister and Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq in a statement on Monday, 9 March.

Hanif stated that the landfill collapse on Sunday, 8 March, which killed four people, demonstrated systemic failure in Jakarta’s waste management and could no longer be tolerated.

According to him, the incident serves as a critical warning for the Jakarta Provincial Government to immediately cease open dumping waste management methods, which continue to endanger residents’ and workers’ lives.
