Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, along with East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud, has ensured the acceleration of the Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facility development in the Balikpapan and Samarinda agglomeration areas.

After the signing of a cooperation agreement between the East Kalimantan Provincial Government and regents/mayors at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) office in Jakarta on Friday, Environment Minister/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH), Hanif, stated that the PSEL construction is being pursued as mandated by President Prabowo Subianto to resolve waste issues.

He noted that the PSEL development is one of the ongoing efforts to address waste problems and achieve a national waste handling rate of 63.41% by 2026.

On the same occasion, East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud said that the PSEL construction will be carried out in the Balikpapan and Samarinda areas. The management area coverage will also include waste originating from the Nusantara Capital City (IKN).

“Because we are flanked by Kutai Kertanegara, in the coastal areas of Balikpapan, Muara Jawa, West Samboja, and Samboja together with the IKN Authority. Meanwhile, in Greater Samarinda, we are together with Kutai Kertanegara, Marangkayu, Muara Badak, and Anggana there for the Greater Samarinda agglomeration,” he said.

He added that with the PSEL construction, it is hoped to support the resolution of waste problems in the East Kalimantan region.
