Entering a Tough Segment: Who Are the Competitors for the Wuling Eksion?
The arrival of the Wuling Eksion represents a new chapter in the SUV competition in Indonesia. No longer just competing against fellow electric vehicles, Wuling is boldly positioning the Eksion to go head-to-head with conventional engine (ICE) and hybrid SUVs that have long dominated the market. With this strategy, the Eksion is not merely an alternative but a serious challenger in the 7-seater family SUV segment. The targeted segment is no ordinary class. Wuling is bringing the Eksion into territory previously occupied by popular models such as the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, Chery Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 CSH, Jaecoo J7, and BYD Atto 3. From a pricing perspective, Wuling is playing aggressively. The Eksion EV is offered starting from Rp 389 million for the first 2,000 consumers, before returning to the normal price of Rp 399 million. Meanwhile, the PHEV variant ranges from Rp 449 million to Rp 499 million. These figures make the Eksion one of the most competitive SUVs in its class, even cheaper than some rivals with conventional engines. In comparison, the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross still plays in the Rp 450–550 million range with a conventional petrol engine. The Chery Tiggo 8 comes with prices of Rp 400–500 million, offering petrol engine options and CSH hybrid technology. The most striking difference lies in their powertrains. The Wuling Eksion comes with two approaches at once: pure EV and PHEV, providing flexibility for consumers. The EV variant offers a fuel-free driving experience with silent operation and instant torque, while the PHEV serves as a transitional solution combining a petrol engine and electric motor. In contrast, rivals still rely on more conventional approaches. The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross continues to feature a petrol engine emphasising durability and performance. The Chery Tiggo 8 attempts to bridge the gap through efficient CSH hybrid technology but still based on a petrol engine. Meanwhile, the Toyota Innova Zenix offers a non-plug-in hybrid system prioritising fuel efficiency and ease of use. Although all models feature a 7-seater configuration, each has distinct characteristics. The Eksion presents itself as a modern SUV with a futuristic approach and high technology. The Xpander Cross highlights a rugged SUV character, the Tiggo 8 plays in the premium realm with abundant features, while the Zenix combines MPV comfort with hybrid efficiency touches. On the features side, all four models are already equipped with modern safety and comfort technologies such as ADAS, 360-degree cameras, and advanced infotainment systems. However, the Eksion has its own advantages through a smoother, quieter electric driving experience and significantly lower operational costs compared to fuel-powered vehicles. Consumers now face not just choices between petrol or hybrid engines, but also full electrification options at increasingly affordable prices.
