Enjoying the City While You Can, While Still Healthy: Elderly Citizens Happy to Receive Free TransJakarta Cards
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Several elderly citizens were happy to receive free transportation service cards from the DKI Jakarta Transportation Department at the Car Free Day event in Bundaran HI, Central Jakarta, on Sunday morning (May 17, 2026).
One of them, Maimunah (66), a resident of Palmerah, plans to use the free transportation card to explore Jakarta. “I just want to take a walk around Jakarta while it’s free and while I’m still healthy,” said Maimunah during a conversation with Kompas.com at the location.
The desire to see the city without worrying about costs is what motivates her to come back to Bundaran HI this morning. Last weekend, she was disappointed because the quota was full when she arrived too late. She doesn’t want to miss this opportunity because the urge to enjoy her old age independently is very strong.
“Last Sunday, when I arrived at eight o’clock, the quota was already full. That’s why today I made an effort to take a motorcycle taxi early in the morning to get here,” said Maimunah while adjusting her sitting position.
The zero-fare facility provided by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government for elderly citizens is indeed acknowledged as being very helpful for their finances. “It’s really great for elderly people like me if I want to just take a walk on Transjakarta without having to ask my children for money,” said Maimunah with a broad smile.
Meanwhile, another elderly citizen, Suryadi (68), a resident of Manggarai, admitted that he intentionally registered for the free transportation card as a means of personal recreation. “I just want to take an afternoon walk around Jakarta while it’s free,” said Suryadi with a smile.
The man wearing a cap was seen checking the required documents in his folder several times to ensure that the process of making the card went smoothly. For Suryadi, traveling by public transportation in Jakarta is now much more comfortable and friendly for elderly people like him.
