Enhancing the Quality of Migrant Worker Human Resources, KP2MI Signs MoUs with BNSP and Universities
The Indonesian Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) has officially entered into collaborations with several strategic partners, ranging from the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP), the Maju Tapian Nauli Foundation, to eight renowned universities in Indonesia. These collaborations are materialised through the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and cooperation agreements (PKS). The signing, which took place at the KP2MI office in South Jakarta on Thursday (16/4/2026), marks a new chapter in institutional transformation and the enhancement of human resource quality for Indonesian migrant workers (PMI). “Now, we have a dual role, no longer just as operators or implementers, but also as regulators that formulate policies. Management is carried out comprehensively from upstream to downstream, starting from preparing prospective workers to empowering post-workers,” he stated in a press release received by Kompas.com on Thursday. Mukhtarudin emphasised that the best protection strategy for migrant workers is competency, considering that placing unskilled labour only enlarges security risks and vulnerabilities in destination countries. “The main strategy in protecting PMI is through strengthening competencies that act as a shield for them abroad,” said Mukhtarudin. Therefore, he stressed that KP2MI’s primary policy focus is now fully shifted to sending skilled workers, particularly at the middle to high skill levels, to minimise security risks. In addition to improving protection, this transformation also delivers tangible economic impacts. In 2025, remittances increased by 14 per cent, directly contributing to poverty alleviation efforts and social welfare improvement in the homeland. “There are still 258,471 job opportunities or about 78.88 per cent that are wide open. This is our collective responsibility to prepare competent human resources so that these opportunities are not wasted and are filled through legal and safe channels,” Mukhtarudin revealed. In line with President Prabowo’s mandate, KP2MI is now focusing its performance on building an integrated protection ecosystem comprehensively from upstream to downstream.
