Englishman dies of overdose

JAKARTA (JP): An Englishman died Saturday after consuming drugs and alcohol in a house on Jl. Jaksa, Menteng, Central Jakarta.

An officer at the Senen Police subprecinct said John Broadbell, 29, had visited his friend, Garry Staggs, at the house on Friday night. They drank alcohol together.

The officer, who asked for anonymity, said John told Garry he had a headache after drinking.

John, who had lived in Kebayoran Baru in South Jakarta for five months, asked Garry for medicine. "Garry gave John medicine, but he refused to say what kind of medicine it was," the officer said.

He said Garry rushed John to the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital, where John died a few hours later.

Staff at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital morgue said the hospital's forensic expert suspected the drug and alcohol combination had killed John.

He said John's relatives planned to send his body to England today. (jun)
