Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti has stated that English will become a compulsory subject across Indonesia starting in 2027, beginning with pupils in grade 3 of primary school and its equivalents.

“This policy aims to prepare the future generation to be more ready to compete in the global arena,” Abdul Mu’ti said during a visit to review the revitalisation progress of SDN Utue in Pidie Regency on Monday.

He explained that to realise this programme, teachers will be provided with training so they can implement it optimally in all educational units throughout Indonesia.

“God willing, the capacity building of teachers for English language instruction will continue to be enhanced in order to produce a generation capable of mastering foreign languages,” he said.

According to him, by introducing English from an early age, Indonesia is not only targeting progress in national education but also aiming to improve the global communication skills of Indonesian children, which are increasingly important in this interconnected era.

He stated that the policy is part of the government’s commitment to producing graduates with global competitiveness. He expressed optimism that the policy would provide sufficient preparation for students to face future global challenges.
