English debate on the death sentence

JAKARTA (JP): An English debate will take place at the
University of Indonesia campus in Depok next week.

Called the Jakarta Varsities English Debate, it has been
organized by the Local Committee of the Brussels-based
Association Internationale des Etudiantes en Sciences et
Commerciales (AIESEC) of the University of Indonesia.

Twelve teams from four universities and an institute will take
part in the preliminary rounds on April 6, while the semi-finals
and finals will be held the next day.

The finalists are scheduled to debate with Ascobat Gani, dean
of the School of Public Health of the University of Indonesia,
and Amir Santosa, a lecturer at the School of Political and
Social Sciences, with capital punishment as the topic.

All debates will be held at the School of Economy's auditorium
and are open to the public, according to the project officer,
Indah Iramadhini.

AIESEC, an international organization for students interested
in economics and business, has 75,000 members from 750
universities throughout the world.

The debating teams are from the University of Indonesia, the
Trisakti University, the Tarumanegara University, the Malang-
based University of Brawijaya and the Institute for the
Development of Indonesian Professions. (sim)
