Engineering Study Programmes Renamed 'Engineering', Deputy Chairman of Commission X Hopes for Improved Curriculum and Graduate Quality
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) has officially changed the nomenclature of engineering study programmes (Prodi) to ‘Engineering’ in all universities in Indonesia.
The Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Lalu Hadrian Irfani, responded to the policy in a measured way.
“On the one hand, we support the effort to align with the international term ‘engineering’ because it can increase the global recognition of Indonesian graduates,” Lalu told Kompas.com on Friday (15/5/2026).
“Because the spirit behind the name change must truly have an impact on competitiveness,” he said.
He emphasised that the government must ensure that this change in nomenclature does not disadvantage graduates in the accreditation process, professional certification, job recruitment, or international recognition.
“The main focus of higher education must still be on improving the quality and competitiveness of graduates, not just on changing the name of the study programme,” he said.
The decision was made based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 96/B/KPT/2025 concerning the Name of Study Programmes in the Type of Academic Education and Professional Education.
The change was signed by the Director General of Higher Education, Khairul Munadi, on 9 September 2025.
