Energy Task Force Formed to Prepare Incentives for Converting Gasoline Motorcycles to Electric
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced the formation of a task force to accelerate the implementation of new and renewable energy. The team was formed after a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto.
Lahadalia explained that the meeting discussed accelerating the adoption of clean energy, including the conversion of petrol-powered motorcycles to electric motorcycles. ‘We have just completed a limited meeting with the president whose discussions focused on implementing clean and renewable energy, including its link to accelerating the conversion kit for our motor vehicles, of which around 120 million use petrol; we are attempting a phased conversion to electric motorcycles,’ Lahadalia said in a video posted by the President’s Secretariat on Friday (6 March 2026).
‘The President is very keen that the implementation be carried out as soon as possible. The President stated that a maximum of three to four years, and perhaps sooner if possible,’ he added.
To speed up the process, the President also formed a dedicated task force. Its job is to translate energy transition policies into practical implementation.
‘There is now cheaper technology available, perhaps around IDR 5–6 million, and the government will seek to assist in reducing the burden of conversion,’ Lahadalia added.
He went on to say that government support could take the form of incentives or subsidies. However, the formula will still be discussed by the newly formed task force.
‘Something like that (subsidies), but we will work out a good formula. The task force has just been formed, and was announced today,’ Lahadalia said.
