Energy saving should be effective

From Bisnis Indonesia

With world crude oil prices hovering at US$60 per barrel, high
fuel subsidies and slow fuel price adjustment, the nation is
facing an energy crisis and a serious fiscal problem.

The government move to save energy is correct, but its
realization needs to be accurately studied so it does not clash
with other priorities. The governor of Bank Indonesia and the
finance minister have warned that energy cutbacks should not
hamper economic growth.

Meanwhile, the government and state enterprises as well as the
House of Representatives and regional councils should set good
examples of energy saving through serious commitments, by
stopping waste and limiting unnecessary meetings and tours.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's decision to wear a short-
sleeved batik shirt has had a considerable impact on society. The
public is thus willing to go on foot or by bicycle to work to
follow the President's example.
