Energy-Saving Initiative: Sragen Regent Cycles to Office
Sragen Regent Sigit Pamungkas started the workweek by cycling from his official residence to the office on Monday, 6 April 2026, as a form of support for the energy-saving programme. This action also serves as a direct example for civil servants (ASN) in the Sragen Regency Government environment.
Sigit assessed that environmentally friendly mobility needs to be habitualised as long as conditions allow.
“This is part of implementing the government’s directive to carry out energy saving,” said Sigit when met upon arriving at the Sragen Regency Government Office, Central Java, on Monday morning.
He explained that the bike-to-work programme is a follow-up to the central government’s instructions regarding energy efficiency. The local government encourages the use of bicycles in daily work activities, especially for relatively short distances. However, this policy still considers certain conditions such as health, distance, and high mobility needs.
“As long as it can be covered by bicycle, that mobility can be facilitated by bicycle, then we succeed in the energy-saving programme,” said Sigit.
He stated that this directive does not only apply to him but also to all ASN in Sragen. According to him, ASN participation is key to the success of the programme because it involves changes in work habits. The local government also hopes that collective awareness can be formed through this policy.
“For our ASN, we urge everyone to support the success of the government’s energy-saving programme,” he said.
Regarding field implementation, the Sragen Regency Government will follow up on instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs. One form is the issuance of a circular letter as a guideline for implementation across all regional apparatus organisations. Nevertheless, this policy is not mandatory but rather an appeal that is expected to be carried out together.
“Instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs have been issued, later we will follow up in the form of a circular letter,” he said.
Sigit added that the programme does not only apply at the regency level but also to village governments. He mentioned that energy saving is a global issue that requires support from all parties. Therefore, all levels of government are encouraged to participate.
“This is a global issue that we must succeed in from all levels of government,” he said.
On the other hand, the Work From Home (WFH) policy in Sragen Regency will continue to be implemented every Friday in accordance with national regulations. The Sragen Regency Government chooses to follow this policy as part of synchronisation with the central government. This is deemed still relevant in supporting energy efficiency.
“The decision remains on Friday because it applies nationally,” said Sigit.
Support for this programme also comes from ASN circles. One employee, Wagito, admitted to participating in successfully implementing the policy because it aligns with national efforts in energy saving. He has even become accustomed to cycling from home to the office, a distance of about five kilometres.
“Clearly, as an ASN in Sragen Regency, I participate in succeeding the programme because it is national in nature for energy saving,” he said.
According to Wagito, cycling not only supports the government programme but also provides health benefits. He stated that the activity makes the body fitter even though it requires sweating before work. The cycling routine is also deemed not to disrupt work time because it can be well managed.
“It’s quite healthy, sweating like this, the journey takes about 15 minutes and I can still arrive at work on time,” he said.
