Jakarta - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has revealed that the coal volume required by PT PLN (Persero) reaches 154 million tonnes per year. This figure is needed to guarantee the reliability of the national electricity supply.

Deputy Minister of ESDM Yuliot Tanjung explained that the government is currently making adjustments to close the gap between the actual required volume and the existing contracts. He said the ministry is coordinating intensively with producers to ensure power plant fuel stocks remain secure.

“So, the Minister has already conveyed that an evaluation has been carried out for all of PLN’s needs. And those will be fulfilled,” he stated when met at the ESDM Ministry Office in Jakarta on Wednesday (17/6/2026).

Of PLN’s total coal requirement of 154 million tonnes, the volume already secured through cooperation contracts has so far only reached 132 million tonnes.

“It was conveyed yesterday that PLN’s requirement is 154 million, and what has been fulfilled based on contracts is 132 million. The shortfall of 20 million is currently being addressed through adjustments,” Yuliot continued.

The government is optimistic that the supply shortfall can be resolved soon through production adjustment policies within the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB). Initially, the RKAB target for this year was around 600 million tonnes of coal.

“Certainly (production will exceed 600 million tonnes). Yes, adjusting to domestic needs. There is a set Domestic Market Obligation (DMO),” he concluded.
