Energy and Economic Crisis Looms Over Israel in the Next Two Decades

Israel’s State Comptroller, Matanyahu Englman, has warned that Israel risks losing its energy independence within the next two decades. If current consumption rates persist, the country will likely be forced to import natural gas in about 22 years due to the depletion of available reserves. According to a report by the oversight body released on Wednesday (25/6/2026) and cited by the Israel Broadcasting Authority, the currently discovered gas reserves may not be sufficient to meet future domestic needs. This situation unfolds amid the continued export of a significant portion of Israel’s gas production abroad. The report noted that approximately 49 per cent of Israel’s natural gas production in 2024 was exported to Egypt and Jordan. The State Comptroller criticised the government for not increasing gas allocation for the domestic market, even though discovered reserves have grown in recent years. Natural gas currently accounts for about 70 per cent of Israel’s electricity production. However, the Ministry of Energy is considered to lack a long-term policy to guarantee the needs of the local market. Furthermore, there is no comprehensive plan for the energy sector or adequate gas storage facilities.
