End of a Brief Escape for Perpetrator of Brutal Shooting at Canggu Bar
The escape attempt by H did not last long. The Indonesian citizen (WNI) was the perpetrator of a brutal shooting at The Shady Pig bar on Jalan Raya Berawa, Canggu, North Kuta, Badung, Bali, in the early hours of Friday (17/7/2026). Police arrested H shortly after he landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Sunday (19/7/2026).
Police investigations managed to sniff out H’s whereabouts. After firing the shots at the scene, he did not immediately leave Bali. H hid for a time before departing for Jakarta via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.
A joint team from the North Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Badung Police Criminal Investigation Division moved quickly, coordinating with the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police, as well as Ngurah Rai Immigration and Soekarno-Hatta Airport Immigration.
H was then intercepted and arrested moments after arriving at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Saturday evening (18/7/2026). Following his arrest, he was immediately flown back to Bali to undergo intensive examination at the Badung Police headquarters.
Badung Police Chief AKBP Joseph Edward Purba was not yet willing to detail the arrest process when confirmed on Sunday (19/7/2026). Police stated that the details of the case would be disclosed later.
The mystery of the type of firearm used by H now rests on the results of forensic laboratory tests. Police are currently awaiting the results of an examination of a single copper-yellow projectile that was secured as evidence at the scene.
The projectile, which penetrated the thigh of security officer IMYM before lodging in the thigh of a Chinese national identified as EA, is being thoroughly researched by the Bali Regional Police Forensic Laboratory. This is to reveal the specifications and ownership of the weapon.
The investigation into the shooting, which shocked the international tourist area, is continuing after the perpetrator was apprehended at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. To strengthen the evidence regarding the course of events and the ownership of the projectile, Badung Police Criminal Investigation Division investigators have so far examined three witnesses.
“A number of witnesses have been examined. Three witnesses, and the results of the projectile examination are still pending from the Bali Regional Police Forensic Laboratory,” said Badung Police Public Relations Subdivision Officer Aiptu Ni Nyoman Ayu Inastuti.
Police have assured that in-depth details regarding the motive behind the Indonesian man’s cowboy-style action and the complete chronology of his escape before being caught will be presented in more detail in the near future. Currently, investigators are still focused on gathering material evidence and conducting a thorough investigation. “It will be conveyed directly by the Police Chief as soon as possible,” she said.
The brutal shooting occurred at The Shady Pig around 2.50 a.m. local time on Friday. At that time, a bar security officer identified as IMYM (32) was trying to break up an argument between the suspected perpetrator and a Chinese national identified as EA (25).
The attempt to mediate the brawl ended in gunfire. IMYM, who was standing in front of EA, was hit by the shot first. The bullet then penetrated the security guard’s left thigh and struck the left thigh of EA, who was standing directly behind him.
“Initially, there was a commotion between the perpetrator and the foreign tourist, then the security guard came to block right in front of the second victim with their bodies very close together. At that moment, the perpetrator fired a shot so that the bullet penetrated the security guard’s left thigh and then immediately lodged in the left thigh of the foreign national behind him,” said Joseph.
After receiving the report, police deployed a joint team from the Badung Police and North Kuta Police to process the crime scene. Investigators also examined a number of witnesses and analysed closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings.
“The Criminal Investigation Division team and North Kuta Police have conducted a crime scene investigation and analysed the CCTV recordings. We have also sent a request for a visum aet repertum to the hospital where both victims are being treated,” said Joseph.
During the investigation, police secured a number of pieces of evidence from the scene. The evidence includes the victims’ torn and blood-soaked clothing, a pair of black-and-white shoes with bloodstains, a pair of black socks, a white T-shirt, two pairs of cut and torn black jeans, a piece of red chequered cloth, and one bullet projectile.
“All of the victims’ clothing and one copper-yellow bullet projectile have been secured as primary evidence. We are currently fully focused on apprehending the perpetrator so that the main motive for this shooting can be revealed immediately,” concluded Joseph.
