Emulating the Prophet Muhammad, Not Merely Admiring Him

Whenever Muslims speak of the Prophet Muhammad, they certainly profess to love him. That love is an important part of faith. However, loving the Prophet should not stop at expressions, commemorations, or admiration of his character. Love requires proof. Allah Almighty even links love for Him to the willingness to follow the Prophet. Therefore, the moment of remembering the Prophet’s birth and struggle should be an opportunity to ask oneself: how far has our life followed what the Prophet exemplified?

The Prophet Muhammad was an example throughout his entire life. For more than twenty-three years of carrying out his mission, he never made preaching a path to personal gain, power, wealth, or position. When the Quraysh offered various worldly pleasures for him to stop his preaching, he remained steadfast. Various pressures, insults, boycotts, torture, and expulsion did not make him retreat from the path he believed to be the truth. From this it is clear that the Prophet’s struggle was built on sincerity, patience, courage, and full conviction in Allah’s help.

This example becomes even clearer when the Prophet led the community in Medina. He was not only an educator and spiritual guide, but also a community leader, judge, commander, and head of state. In carrying out leadership, he upheld justice without distinguishing a person’s status, chose people who were trustworthy and capable, and made Allah’s revelation the foundation for resolving various problems. This means that the Prophet’s example is not only in the space of worship and personal morals, but is also visible in how society is governed and communal life is conducted.

Unfortunately, the secular perspective that separates religion from public life often narrows the Prophet’s example. He is more often introduced as a figure who taught prayer, fasting, patience, and noble character, while his role as a community leader and head of government receives less attention. In fact, the history of his life shows that Islam came not only to regulate the relationship between humans and Allah, but also to provide guidance in social and state life.

Therefore, emulating the Prophet should be done comprehensively. Muslims need to emulate his worship and morals, while also following his steadfastness in fighting for the message of Islam and taking lessons from his leadership. Love for the Prophet is not enough merely by multiplying expressions of love, but must give birth to a willingness to follow his guidance in life.

In the end, the important question is not simply whether we love the Prophet, but whether that love has changed the way we live our lives. If the Prophet is the best example, then his struggle, steadfastness, justice, and leadership should be an inspiration for Muslims in facing the various problems of the age. Emulating the Prophet means striving to seriously bring Islamic values into life, not making them merely a symbol or ceremonial. And Allah knows best.
