Emulating Kartini: The Importance of Women Continuing to Learn and Be Independent
The emancipatory spirit inherited from Raden Ajeng Kartini remains relevant to this day. Amid various social challenges and the developments of the times, women are encouraged to continue learning and developing themselves to stand independently. Professor of Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Rose Mini Agoes Salim, M.Psi., Psychologist, stresses that education is an important foundation in building women’s strength. Through education, women not only gain knowledge but also the ability to think critically and creatively in facing life’s problems. According to her, the learning process is not limited to formal education in schools or universities. Women can also hone their skills through non-formal education, reading, and following relevant information developments in everyday life. “They know they can solve it in several ways or can see a problem from different angles,” said Prof Romy, quoted from ANTARA, Wednesday (22/4/2026). “I hope that women in Indonesia are truly strong, and in fact many already are like that, and can defend themselves to then develop well,” she added. The role of parents is crucial in accompanying children, including girls, to understand good and bad information, and to form a strong moral foundation. According to her, children need to be equipped with the ability to filter information. This relates to moral formation, so they can determine what is right and wrong. With an assertive attitude, women can express their thoughts, feelings, and desires clearly without harming themselves or others. This ability is considered to help women avoid various forms of intimidation and violence. This is because many women still hesitate or fear to speak out when facing detrimental situations.
