Employers reminded of wage ruling

JAKARTA: Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Jacob Nuwa
Wea urged employers, especially those in the capital, to abide by
the new regulation on minimum wage increases.

The government has, as of this month, put into effect the
planned minimum wage hikes throughout the country. At the
provincial level wages will increase by an average of 28.44
percent, with minimum wages in regencies rising by an average of
28.37 percent.

The reminder was made to anticipate any major protests by
workers should the wage increases not be heeded, the minister
said after the Cabinet meeting.

Employers who refuse to abide by the ruling are naughty, he
said, adding that employers who claim to be unable to pay the
wage hikes will be carefully assessed to assure whether they are
really incapable.

He admitted there is no sanction to those who refuse the wage
increases, though it should be made to weigh on their
consciences, he added. -- Antara
