Employees protest dismissals

JAKARTA (JP): About 30 employees of a shoe factory in North Jakarta complained to City Council yesterday about the company's ongoing dismissals of workers.

Nurwena, the protesters spokeswoman, told the Council's Commission E for people's welfare that the company, PT Suporu, had been arbitrarily firing its employees one by one for some years.

"There used to be 600 people working for the company. Now there are only 50 left," Nurwena said.

She said that the fired workers received between Rp 50,000 (US$22) and Rp 240,000 in compensation. "The company has also failed to pay us for overtime for three months," she added.

Councilor Ary Amier Armas, who received the workers, promised to summon the shoe factory management to settle the dispute. (yns)
