Emergency Tents Prepared as Temporary Classrooms After NTT Earthquake Damages Schools

Emergency schools are being prepared for students whose schools were damaged by the earthquake in Maumere, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday (29/8/2026). A number of police officers erected tents that will be used as temporary learning locations for affected students.

The relocation of learning activities to temporary sites is intended to provide safer spaces while also anticipating the possibility of aftershocks. The emergency schools are expected to keep teaching and learning activities running during the handling and repair of schools affected by the Flores earthquake.

Police officers carried study desks into the emergency school tents. The establishment of emergency schools forms part of the post-earthquake education recovery effort on Flores. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education had previously prepared 50 emergency classroom tents to support affected schools across several areas of Flores, including Sikka.

As of 16 August 2026, the ministry recorded 253 educational units affected by the earthquake, spread across seven regencies on Flores Island.
