Emergency of Sexual Violence in Education: DPR to Summon Relevant Ministries
Jakarta - Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, revealed that Commissions VIII and X will summon the relevant ministries to discuss the sexual violence that is rampant in the education sector.
This was stated in response to the case of sexual violence against a female santri by pesantren officials in Pati Regency, Central Java.
“We will discuss this to find emergency solutions for sexual violence in pesantren institutions and general educational institutions,” Cucun said in his official statement on Thursday (7/5/2026).
Before the Pati case, sexual violence frequently occurred in schools, universities, and pesantrens.
“This must be taken seriously. The emergency of sexual violence in educational environments, including in pesantrens, must be firmly addressed,” Cucun stated.
Cucun then highlighted several cases of sexual violence in education. The first is the sexual violence case by pesantren officials in Pati.
Additionally, there is an alleged sexual violence case at a pesantren in Ciawi, West Java, where the suspected perpetrator is a teacher and alumnus.
The state is deemed to need systematic and measured handling to prevent sexual violence cases in education.
“Given the many sexual violence cases in educational environments, there must be early warning or preventive actions,” Cucun said.
Specifically for the Pati case, the DPR will request explanations regarding the standards for pesantren development that integrate santri protection as part of the institution’s governance.
Furthermore, parliament will also highlight the internal supervision mechanisms of pesantrens and safe reporting systems for santri.
“Also, supervision mechanisms that can reach internal spaces of pesantrens without disturbing the institution’s independence. Then, a safe and accessible reporting system for santri, especially in situations of strong power relations,” Cucun said.
