Embassy to offer legal assistance

KUPANG: The Indonesian Embassy in Timor Leste has been asked to provide legal assistance to Daniel Mendes, an Indonesian citizen who was arrested in Becora Dili on Jan. 21 for his alleged involvement in an exchange of gunfire with Timor Leste Police.

The request came from the Director General of the Economy, Development and Finance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Susanto, in Kupang on Friday.

He said that the ministry hoped the embassy could provide legal counsel and protection for the Indonesian citizen, who was from Belu regency in East Nusa Tenggara.

"I don't know about the gunfire but our embassy there can provide legal assistance for him," Susanto said. -- JP
