Elon Musk: You Will Become the Most Hated Person in America
The dispute between Elon Musk and OpenAI’s executives has entered a new phase. Ahead of the trial, Musk sent threatening messages to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and company President Greg Brockman.
In court documents, Musk asked Brockman if he was interested in settling the dispute. However, when Brockman suggested that both parties withdraw their lawsuits, Musk responded with a harsh statement.
Musk instead threatened that Altman and Brockman would become “the most hated people in America” if they continued with the legal proceedings.
According to OpenAI’s lawyers, the statement shows Musk’s motives and bias. They argue that Musk’s lawsuit aims to attack the competitor and its executives.
In his lawsuit, Elon Musk, one of OpenAI’s founders, claims to have donated around $45 million USD (approximately Rp 783 billion) to support the establishment of the ChatGPT parent company.
Musk stated that this contribution was given with the understanding that OpenAI would remain a non-profit organisation focused on developing AI for the benefit of humanity.
However, when OpenAI transitioned to a for-profit company, Musk felt deceived.
On the other side, OpenAI has a different view. The company claims Musk wanted to merge OpenAI with Tesla and take over the CEO position. When that plan was rejected, Musk distanced himself from OpenAI.
After leaving OpenAI, Musk founded a rival AI company, xAI, in 2023. That company was later acquired by SpaceX ahead of its initial public offering (IPO) plans.
In this new structure, Microsoft holds about 27 percent of the shares, while the non-profit OpenAI Foundation entity gains ownership with a valuation of $130 billion USD (approximately Rp 2.264 trillion).
Overall, OpenAI’s valuation in the latest funding round is said to reach $852 billion USD (approximately Rp 14.845 trillion).
During last week’s hearing, Musk also provided testimony and engaged in several heated debates with OpenAI’s legal team.
OpenAI views Musk’s lawsuit as an attempt to hinder the company’s growth as a competitor in the AI industry.
