Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, has corrected its boss’s statements regarding the construction of an AI data centre in space. The company stated that the idea is still in its early stages and highly complex.

“The initiative to develop orbital AI computing and industrialisation in orbit, on the Moon, and interplanetary is still in its early stages, involving unproven technical and technological complexities, and may not be commercially viable,” SpaceX said in a pre-IPO filing, quoted from Futurism, Thursday (23/4/2026).

SpaceX also highlighted the delivery of sensitive AI chips to space. According to the company, this could cause the chips to wear out faster.

Damage and failures could also occur because the data centre is built in the harsh and unpredictable space environment.

In addition, the company discussed the significant impact if the project, which uses Starship to build a constellation containing up to one million data centres, fails or is delayed. According to SpaceX, it could affect the growth strategy.

“Failure or delay in developing Starship on a large scale or achieving the required launch cadence, reusability, and capabilities will delay or limit our ability to execute our growth strategy,” the document stated.

Musk’s idea was revealed while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year in 2026. According to him, solar energy in space could reduce costs for placing data centres.

The ambitious idea was even estimated to become a reality in a short time, namely within two years.

The project has also faced opposition from several parties. Many experts are sceptical about sending up to one million satellites larger than the International Space Station due to economic and physical limitations.

Other parties assess that the project could cause environmental disasters. The hardware would be damaged and burn up when passing through the atmosphere, releasing large amounts of ozone-depleting chemicals.
