Elon Musk Seeks Self-Regulation, Rejects State Oversight

Elon Musk has invited all AI companies to collaborate by exchanging ‘models’ to mutually test products before they are released to the public. Musk’s statement comes amidst calls from various parties, including other AI executives, to slow down the pace of AI development.

The companies Musk has invited to collaborate include US-based firms such as Anthropic, Google, Meta, and OpenAI, as well as three to four leading companies from China.

“So that, rather than assessing your own work, competitors can now assess it and provide warnings if concerning issues are found,” Musk said, as quoted by CNBC International on Wednesday.

Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and head of xAI, acknowledged that his invitation has not yet been embraced by other AI firms. Conversely, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has suggested that all AI labs should agree to be inspected by “third-party technology testers,” particularly regarding safety.

US President Donald Trump holds an opposing position. According to him, any efforts to slow down AI development only provide China with the opportunity to overtake the United as a leader.

This fear of being overtaken was also noted by Amodei, who described it as the “most difficult dilemma.”

Despite advocating for a system to limit AI development, Musk rejects government attempts to formulate policies or rules regarding AI. For instance, xAI is resisting efforts by the state of Minnesota to ban “nude image generator” applications. The Minnesota regulation is a response to Musk’s Grok image generation technology, which has frequently been used to create deepfake pornographic content using voices and faces without the owners’ permission.

Calls to slow AI development have emerged ahead of the meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. AI is expected to be one of the primary topics discussed during the meeting between the two nations.
