Jakarta (ANTARA) – Two companies owned by Elon Musk, SpaceX and Tesla, have reportedly formed a special committee to discuss a potential merger.

According to a report by Engadget on Wednesday (21 October), Musk disclosed the development during SpaceX’s third-quarter 2026 financial results presentation.

Musk said the committee was formed at shareholders’ request. It comprises independent directors from SpaceX and Tesla.

Tesla currently has seven independent directors, while SpaceX has six. One board member, Ira Ehrenpreis, serves on both companies’ boards.

Tesla is also a shareholder in SpaceX, after a US$2 billion (Rp36.1 trillion) investment in xAI was converted into SpaceX shares following the AI company’s acquisition.

However, approval on Tesla’s side would be more complicated, as it would require votes from at least 50 per cent of all shareholders, not only those with voting rights. This means the proposed merger remains uncertain.

A merger could create a single entity worth trillions of US dollars, while giving Musk greater control over the future direction of AI and robotics development.
