Elon Musk Regrets Political Overreach as Business Empire Crumbles
The fate of Elon Musk’s business empire is hanging in the balance. A series of failures, ranging from SpaceX to Tesla, has culminated in the billionaire expressing regret over his deep foray into the political arena. Last week, SpaceX was forced to abort the maiden test flight of its giant Starship rocket after several engines failed. The incident is a stark illustration of investor doubts regarding Musk’s grand ambitions, occurring as the company’s share price continues to decline following its initial public offering.
Tesla is facing an equally dire situation. Sales of its electric vehicles have reportedly plummeted due to a public backlash against Musk’s controversial behaviour and statements. Even a recent surge in revenue could not halt the freefall of Tesla’s stock price this week, as massive spending on artificial intelligence ventures continues to balloon costs.
Amid this intense pressure on his business empire, Musk finally broke his silence in an interview with The Economist. He admitted regret over his extensive political involvement while leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the start of the Trump administration. ‘I got too involved in politics and, frankly, I went too far,’ Musk confessed.
His tenure at DOGE left a trail of destruction, including mass layoffs of civil servants, drastic cuts to foreign aid budgets, and a series of controversial public statements. The backlash triggered widespread protests and data security scandals, cementing Musk’s status as one of the most unpopular figures in the United States.
Despite his claims of wanting to step back from dismantling the government structure, The Economist noted that Musk shows no signs of retreating from geopolitics. He continues to attack the media and defend far-right leaders in Europe. The publication bluntly described his political views as ‘clearly bigoted and prejudiced.’ Musk is now promoting a new narrative, promising that AI development will lead to an ‘era of extraordinary abundance’ where money becomes irrelevant. However, given his track record at DOGE, the public remains deeply sceptical of his vision for the future.
