Elon Musk Predicts Coding Will Become Obsolete This Year

Jakarta, VIVA – Elon Musk has once again sparked debate in the technology world after declaring that artificial intelligence (AI) will advance to the point where it can write and optimise its own code without human involvement.

According to Musk, conventional coding practices will gradually be abandoned as AI becomes capable of directly generating more efficient binary code. During an internal meeting with his xAI team this week, Musk expressed his views bluntly.

“Everything is going to change, possibly as early as the end of this year. You won’t even need to write code yourself anymore. AI will generate binary code directly,” he said.

xAI is Musk’s AI company, which officially integrated with SpaceX in early February 2026. The integration is believed to strengthen Musk’s ambition to build a comprehensive AI-based technology ecosystem.

Musk contends that AI’s ability to generate binary code directly will surpass the performance of traditional compilers that software developers have relied upon. In the future, users will simply need to provide instructions or prompts to obtain their desired results, without having to go through the stages of writing and compiling code as is currently the case.

This approach, he said, has the potential to significantly streamline the software development process. Musk also expressed optimism about the development of his company’s flagship model.

“We estimate that Grok Code will reach its most advanced level within the next two to three months. The progress has been extremely rapid,” he revealed. Previously, xAI had launched Grok Code Fast 1 in the middle of last year.

The model is claimed to deliver high performance with a compact design and efficient operating costs, enabling it to be used for a wide range of general programming needs on an instant basis.

At the same event, Musk outlined his plans to build an AI platform capable of competing across multiple sectors, ranging from Large Language Models (LLMs) and image and video generators to AI-based software development tools.

However, behind this expansion, xAI has also undergone organisational restructuring. Two of its co-founders, Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba, were reported to have left the company on 9 and 10 February 2026.

Musk responded to the changes by saying, “When a company grows, there are people who are better suited to the early stages and others who are more suited to the next phase.”
