Elon Musk loses lawsuit against OpenAI

San Francisco – A jury in Oakland, California, United States, on Monday, 18 May, ruled in favour of the artificial intelligence company OpenAI in a lawsuit brought by Elon Musk. The verdict stated that Musk’s claims were time-barred by the limitation period, according to US media reports. The reports said the advisory jury reached a unanimous verdict, and United States District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers accepted the ruling. Public court documents from the United States District Court for the Northern District of California show that the case was filed in 2024. Musk accused OpenAI and its executives, including Sam Altman, of diverging from the company’s original mission and prioritising commercial interests over public interests. OpenAI and the other defendants rejected the allegations, arguing that Musk had long been aware of changes to the company’s structure and delayed filing his lawsuit. OpenAI was founded in 2015 with Musk as one of its co-founders. Musk left the company in 2018. In recent years, the company has grown rapidly after launching AI products such as ChatGPT and forging close partnerships with Microsoft.
