Eliminate the high cost economy: Kadin

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(Kadin) has called on the government to eliminate the high cost
components of the economy, to stop preferential treatment of
certain groups and improve the professionalism of civil servants.

"We view these steps as necessary to support our
industrialization process to build a strong industry in this
country," said Kadin in a statement, issued at the end of a two-
day working conference, yesterday.

It said that the country's industry is still weak, as
indicated by the slow growth of agroindustry and its dependence
on the import of components and raw materials.

"We support every form of partnership between the big and
small companies within the framework to strengthen our industrial
structure," said the private business organization.

The government, it said, should take necessary steps to
correct the sharp inequality in the ownership of productive
assets.

"The government should also tackle the problem of the
economic gap, the development gap between the eastern part and
the western part of Indonesia and the gap between big and small
companies," it said.

To enhance a more equitable distribution of income, it called
for an enlarged access of small and medium size companies to
credit and business opportunities and for incentives for
investors willing to do business in the eastern region.

Kadin, the statement said, should work together with the
government in formulating economic policies.

"We are extremely willing to become the partner of the
government in formulating economic measures," it said.

Kadin will soon set up a team to study the problem of the high
cost economy and work out effective ways of rooting out the
sources of the high costs.

"We'll also continue to educate our members to honor business
ethics and keep improving their efficiency and productivity which
is imperative to enable them to benefit from the increasingly
liberalized trade," the statement said. (13)
