Eleven die in West Java bus crash

JAKARTA (JP): Eleven people died and four were seriously injured when two buses crashed into each other in Krangkeng district, Indramayu, West Java, late on Wednesday.

Antara reported from the neighboring town of Cirebon that the Ismo and Garuda Mas buses were driving in opposite directions.

The crash sent the Ismo bus plunging into the river. Thirty- seven people sustained minor injuries in addition to the dead and seriously wounded.

The chief of traffic police in Cirebon, Maj. Basir Tarmizi, said the Garuda Mas bus swerved to right when it was overtaking another vehicle and drove onto a bridge intended for vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

Seven of the seriously injured people were taken to Indramayu hospital and four others to Gunung Jati hospital in Cirebon, 25 kilometers away from the site of the accident.

Both drivers were among the dead. Wartono the driver of the Garuda Mas bus was a resident of Celeng Lohbener in Idramayu and Tukino, the Ismo bus river, resided in Kotabambu subdistrict in the West Jakarta district of Palmerah.

Four of the dead were from separate areas in Wonogiri regency, Central Java. They were identified as Sumijo, 38, Tarti, 35, Sutimo, 35, and Tiyem, 53. Another victim, Sukino, 48, was from Tangerang. Four others, including three women, have yet to be identified.
