Eleven dead in guerrilla attack

DILI, East Timor: In two separate incidents, guerrillas attacked and killed five soldiers and six civilians last week.

East Timor Military Commander Salamat Sidabutar confirmed yesterday that two attacks occurred on Thursday.

The first attack came when guerrillas shot up a truck carrying villagers working on road construction. Five were killed.

The second several hours later when separatist guerrillas attacked a military vehicle carrying soldiers and civilians. Five soldiers and one civilian were killed in the attack.

"They no longer have any idealism left ... they've all gone mad, killing randomly like that," Sidabutar charged angrily.

"They're not only killing soldiers, but also regular people who build roads," he said. (33)
