Elephants, tigers run amok

PEKANBARU, Riau: Eleven elephants and three tigers ran amok in a rubber plantation in Langgam subdistrict, Riau province, killing one plantation worker.

The victim, identified as Lahit, 27, was attacked by a tiger as the elephants trampled the plantation, Langgam subdistrict head, Tengku Khalil Jaafar, said in Bangkinang district Friday.

Antara quoted locals as saying that elephants and tigers had been spotted wandering around the village in search of food.

The incident was confirmed by Mual Daulay, an official of the provincial natural resources conservation office.

"We have already deployed teams to Langgam and Kerintang subdistrict in Indragiri Hulu district to capture the wild animals," Daulay said.

He also said a baby elephant had died in Langgam, possibly of starvation.
