Elementary schools for Dayak tribe

BARABAI, South Kalimantan: The Hulu Sungai Tengah administration
has allocated approximately Rp 1.8 billion for the renovation and
construction of elementary schools for members of the Dayak tribe
living in the area of Meratus mountain.

The head of public relations for the local administration,
Mardiansyah, said in Barabai district, some 165 kilometers from
the South Kalimantan capital of Banjarmasin, on Tuesday that the
construction of new schools in isolated areas was meant to
improve the quality of life for the tribe.

He said most members of the Dayak tribe living near Meratus
mountain were illiterate, because the nearest schools to their
villages were dozens of kilometers away.

Mardiansyah said South Kalimantan Governor M. Sjachriel Darham
planned to build educational and health facilities for the local
Dayak people, including renovating 13 elementary schools in the
district and granting scholarships to 609 students in the
regency.--Antara
