Solid economic growth is driving an increase in national energy needs. Amid strengthening economic activity, electricity demand is rising, impacting the growing role of the mining sector, particularly coal and nickel.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency records Indonesia’s economy growing by 5.61 percent in the first quarter of 2026 year-on-year. This growth is supported by household consumption and increased public mobility, which also drives energy needs.

National electricity demand is projected to increase by 5.3 percent annually over the 2025-2034 period. This rise is boosting the need for coal as the main support for power generation while enhancing domestic mining activities.

On the other hand, nickel is becoming a key commodity in the global energy transition. Indonesia currently controls around 67 percent of world nickel production and is projected to increase to 74 percent by 2035.

Along with this increase, mining activities are becoming larger with increasingly high technical complexity. This condition is driving greater operational needs in the field.

President Director of PT Andalan Artha Primanusa, Gahari Christine, said the success of mining projects heavily depends on field execution.

“In the mining industry, what matters most is not just the resources, but the consistency of execution in the field. Therefore, the role of contractors is becoming increasingly important in maintaining productivity and operational efficiency,” she stated in a comment, quoted on Thursday (7/5/2026).

Nickel industry growth is also projected to continue at around 8 percent annually, with total global production reaching 5 million metric tons by 2035. On the downstream side, Indonesia controls around 45 percent of the world’s nickel processing market share.

The increased activity in coal and nickel commodities is driving the need for mining contractor services, especially to support increasingly complex operational activities.
