Electric Cars for Long-Distance Eid Homecoming: Preparation Strategies to Ensure a Smooth Journey
Jakarta — The trend of using electric vehicles for long-distance journeys, including Eid al-Fitr mudik, is rising. In addition to lower operating costs, EVs also offer a quieter, more comfortable driving experience. Equally important is preparation before departure to keep the journey safe and trouble-free.
Budi Darmawan Jantania, Vice Country Director of the Chery Business Unit at PT Chery Sales Indonesia, said that in principle, mudik with an electric vehicle is not very different from conventional vehicles. ‘Owners are advised to carry out a thorough inspection at an official workshop before undertaking long journeys, to ensure all vehicle systems are in optimal condition and ready for use,’ he told Kompas.com on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.
He explained there are several key components that must be checked before departure, including the braking system, tyre condition and pressure, cooling system, the 12V battery, and the electrical and charging systems.
This inspection is important to maintain the vehicle’s peak performance while ensuring safety and comfort during the trip. In addition to technical checks, EV owners should pay particular attention to trip planning. Unlike petrol-powered cars where fuel stations are relatively easy to locate, EV users must ensure the availability of Public Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles (SPKLU) along the route.
‘It is also advised to charge the battery to an optimal level before departure, and to match charging points with the vehicle’s estimated range,’ said Budi. This view was echoed by Arif Nugroho, Service Manager at Hyundai Kalijaga Cirebon.
‘Then update the vehicle software when available,’ Arif added. In addition, tyre pressures should be aligned with the manufacturer’s recommendations to maintain energy efficiency and vehicle stability.
Drivers are also advised to carry a standard charging cable and a portable charger if available. Arif added that general checks such as brakes, wipers, and even battery coolant should not be neglected. Equally important is a well-planned route to ensure the journey remains comfortable.
‘Route planning is crucial to ensure the journey remains comfortable and free from range anxiety,’ Arif said. With thorough preparation, mudik using electric cars can still be safe, comfortable, and efficient, even for long-distance journeys.
