Election violations found
SEMARANG, Central Java: Activists from the provincial branch of the United Development Party have accused local community leaders of electioneering.
A number of neighborhood chiefs in Tegal city, Pemalang regency, reportedly visited prospective voters in the area and persuaded them to vote for the ruling Golkar group in the 1997 general election.
"Those neighborhood chiefs are not personnel of Golkar. How dare they launch this so-called political survey on the pretext that they were taking an inventory of Golkar's members," said the party chapter's deputy chairman Djuhad Mahya.
Djuhad said yesterday that the branch will report the violations to Minister of Home Affairs Moch. Yogie S.M and the House of Representatives.
"If the minister wishes to look for himself, I'll take him there," he said. (har/swe)
