Election of ITB Rector

From Republika

The nomination and election process for the rector of the Bandung Institute of Technology reflects the highest respect of all in ITB academic circles for democracy and transparency.

It is really an extraordinary breakthrough that even a foreigner can take up the position. However, some government regulations could pose an obstacle. Those who apply for nomination need not be ITB alumni. The requirement makes it clear that both civilians and military members may apply for this position. Also, there is no gender discrimination as both males and females may run for election. Other requirements which may reek of ethnicity, religion or sectarianism have also been dropped.

A candidate for the ITB rectorship must meet the requirements which are openly published in media advertisements. Anybody meeting these requirements may apply.

Rationally, such requirements are expected to promote the ITB, which in turn will promote the community itself and the country.

To get credible and capable candidates for civil service positions from echelon 1 right up to the presidency, ITB's way of finding its rector may serve as a model.
