A video of an elderly woman struggling to climb the Tapal Kuda Lenteng Agung pedestrian bridge (JPO) has gone viral on social media. The elderly woman was forced to navigate the stairs because the lift at the South Jakarta bridge was damaged by unknown persons (OTK).

In the circulating video, the elderly woman can be seen slowly ascending the left side of the staircase, occasionally slowing her pace and gripping the handrail for support. She is seen pausing periodically before continuing her climb. The video shows the staircase was relatively empty, meaning no other commuters were available to assist her.

The elderly woman was forced to use the steep stairs because the lift, which is intended to assist the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities, is out of order. The Jakarta Highways Agency (Dinas Bina Marga DKI Jakarta) stated that the lift at the Lenteng Agung bridge is currently undergoing repairs following the act of vandalism.

“Currently, the Lenteng Agung JPO lift cannot operate temporarily due to damage to the electrical system caused by acts of vandalism,” the Jakarta Highways Agency stated via their Instagram account, @binamargadki, on Tuesday (9/6/2026).

The agency noted that the lift cables were targeted during the act of vandalism which occurred last Tuesday (2/6). According to information uploaded by the agency on Monday (8/6), the bridge lift is now in the repair stage. “It is hoped that in the near future, the lift can return to optimal functionality,” they added.

There is currently no further information regarding whether the cables were cut solely for vandalism or for theft. The Highways Agency has urged the public to work together to protect and maintain provided public facilities. “Public facilities are shared assets whose benefits can be felt by all citizens if well-maintained. Let us protect Jakarta’s public facilities for our collective comfort, safety, and ease of mobility,” the agency appealed.
