Elderly Mujiran Released After Accused of Causing Rp8m Loss to PTPN; DPR Member Urges 'Stop Targeting Small Citizens'
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of the VI Commission of the DPR from the PAN faction, Abdul Hakim Bafagih, urged PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) I to focus on resolving internal company issues rather than being harsh towards small citizens.
According to Hakim, the biggest problems in state-owned enterprises (BUMNs) stem from mafia activities and internal schemes.
‘When it comes to theft and losses, the public is aware that the largest issues in many plantation BUMNs often arise from leaks, mafia, internal schemes, and practices harming the company from within. These should be addressed first,’ Hakim said when asked for confirmation on Monday (25 May 2026).
He stressed that PTPN must not exhaust its efforts chasing small citizens like elderly Mujiran.
‘PTPN must improve itself. The company’s energy should not be spent chasing small citizens while major internal issues go unnoticed,’ he added.
Hakim also stated that a humanitarian approach should be prioritised in resolving cases involving small communities.
‘I appreciate the swift action and firm stance of BP BUMN Head Dony Oskaria in handling the case involving Mujiran. A humanitarian, social justice-oriented, and protection-focused approach towards small citizens should be the face of BUMNs moving forward,’ he added.
PTPN I management followed the directive from BP BUMN Head Dony Oskaria to halt the case.
‘Through restorative justice mechanisms, we are relieved that Mujiran has been released and reunited with his family,’ said PTPN management in a statement on Monday (25 May 2026).
Mujiran was accused of hiding tapped rubber latex in bushes to sell to his accomplice, Nur Wahid (33).
Officers apprehended Nur Wahid during a pre-dawn operation to seize two sacks of rubber.
An investigation revealed 10 sacks of rubber totalling 550 kilograms in weight.
PTPN reported a loss of Rp8.8 million from the incident.
The case attracted public attention due to Mujiran’s advanced age, with reports stating the action was taken to support his family.
