Elderly Citizens Queue to Register for Free Transportation Cards at Jakarta's Car-Free Day Event
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Several elderly citizens queued up to register for Free Service Cards (KLG) for public transportation at the Car-Free Day (CFD) event in Bundaran HI, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Sunday (17/5/2026).
Kompas.com observed at the location at 07:20 WIB that while some residents were still enjoying the Car-Free Day by cycling and taking leisurely walks, several people crowded around the service booth belonging to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Transportation Department.
Behind a wooden table guarded by uniformed officers, citizens jostled to take a queue number or simply ask about the requirements for applying for the free transportation card.
A notice board with the inscription “Ferry Service Information” was also seen standing on the left side of the tent, displaying routes 1 to 4.
One of them was Saodah (67), a resident of Tanah Abang who had been queuing since morning.
“I’ve been here since half-past seven. It was still quiet earlier, but now it’s so crowded. Thank goodness, my name was called, and I got the card,” said Saodah when met by Kompas.com at the location.
Saodah looked happy as she put the blue card she had just received in her pocket.
With a cloth bag on her shoulder and a light brown headscarf, she admitted that she came early after hearing information from her neighbor.
“It’s for Transjakarta and commuter trains, it’s free. That’s good, because I have to go to my child in Depok every week,” she said.
Another was Rustam (72), a resident of Kemayoran who came with his grandson.
“They said there was an error in my data, and I had to go to the local sub-district office first. I’ve been queuing for over an hour. I came all the way from Kemayoran, but I couldn’t get it,” said Rustam.
He did not bring a cell phone, so he could not monitor the latest information from the Transportation Department’s social media.
“I heard about it from my neighbor, who told me to come here on Sunday morning. But that’s okay, maybe it’s not meant to be,” he said resignedly.
