El Niño Predicted to Last Until January 2027, Pramono Urges Jakarta to Remain Alert
The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has requested all ranks of the Jakarta Provincial Government to increase preparedness in facing the El Niño phenomenon. According to BMKG predictions, El Niño is expected to continue until January 2027.
This was stated by Pramono while leading the ‘Jakarta Guard’ Rally for 2026 Dry Season Preparedness at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (2/9/2026). El Niño is a phenomenon involving the warming of sea surface temperatures above normal conditions.
“The Jakarta Provincial Government is holding the Jakarta Guard Rally in relation to anticipating potential fire handling in Jakarta, facing El Niño which is predicted to last until the end of September, and even BMKG predicts until January 2027,” said Pramono.
Pramono stated that these conditions must be anticipated because the dry season and El Niño can increase the risk of drought and fires. Based on BMKG predictions, the peak of the dry season will occur during August-September 2026.
“This condition can pose various risks, ranging from drought, fires, and decreased air quality, to threats to public health,” he said.
He revealed that 457 fire incidents occurred in Jakarta throughout July to August 2026. Specifically in August, there were approximately 240 fire incidents.
He mentioned that electrical short circuits are the suspected most dominant cause of fires. Additionally, fires were also triggered by waste burning and negligence by residents discarding cigarette butts.
“The most dominant suspected cause is electrical short circuits. Secondly, it is waste burning, and there are also several cases occurring due to the negligence of people throwing cigarette butts and so on,” he explained.
West Jakarta (Jakbar) has become the region with the highest number of fires, followed by East Jakarta. Tambora District in West Jakarta and Cakung in East Jakarta were identified as areas with the highest fire potential.
Not only fires, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also anticipating the impacts of drought. A total of 29 water tankers from 10 agencies and institutions have been prepared to assist in the distribution of clean water.
Pramono stated that two sub-districts are currently experiencing drought, namely Kalibaru and Semper in North Jakarta (Jakut).
“Twenty-nine tankers from ten participating agencies and institutions have been provided to address the issue of water shortages in Jakarta,” he said.
The Head of the Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Marulitua Sijabat, added that residents experiencing drought can report through the Jakarta Siaga 112 call centre service.
“We have also coordinated with PAM Jaya to prepare communication channels, especially through 112,” said Marulitua.
He stated that such reports will be followed up with the facilitation of clean water distribution alongside PAM Jaya.
“If the community encounters drought incidents, please report immediately to 112, and we will facilitate the distribution of clean water with PAM Jaya,” he added.
