Eka Tjipta wins CEO award
JAKARTA (JP): Eka Tjipta Widjaja, chairman of the diversified Sinar Mas Group, has been selected by ING Bank as 1996 Emerging Market Chief Executive Officer of the Year, the Sinar Mas Group announced yesterday.
"The CEO award was presented to Eka at a dinner party at the Willard Inter-Continental in Washington on Monday during the joint annual meetings of the Interational Monetary Fund and the World Bank," the company said in a statement.
An award was also presented to John Browne, the CEO of British Petroleum.
Eka is the chief executive of a corporation based in an emerging economy. The company's vision and performance, the statement said, can be offered as a model for the companies in other developing countries.
Browne is the chief executive of a company headquartered in the developed world. British Petroleum's expansion into emerging markets, said the statement, has shown how emerging markets can contribute to corporate profitability.
The annual election of the two CEOs of the year is sponsored by ING Bank in cooperation with International Media Partners.
Eka is the first Indonesian to receive the award which was established in 1994. He has expressed his ambition to continue promoting Indonesia overseas through his export of paper and cooking oil. (13)
