Eka Tjipta wins CEO award

JAKARTA (JP): Eka Tjipta Widjaja, chairman of the diversified
Sinar Mas Group, has been selected by ING Bank as 1996 Emerging
Market Chief Executive Officer of the Year, the Sinar Mas Group
announced yesterday.

"The CEO award was presented to Eka at a dinner party at the
Willard Inter-Continental in Washington on Monday during the
joint annual meetings of the Interational Monetary Fund and the
World Bank," the company said in a statement.

An award was also presented to John Browne, the CEO of British
Petroleum.

Eka is the chief executive of a corporation based in an
emerging economy. The company's vision and performance, the
statement said, can be offered as a model for the companies in
other developing countries.

Browne is the chief executive of a company headquartered in
the developed world. British Petroleum's expansion into emerging
markets, said the statement, has shown how emerging markets can
contribute to corporate profitability.

The annual election of the two CEOs of the year is sponsored
by ING Bank in cooperation with International Media Partners.

Eka is the first Indonesian to receive the award which was
established in 1994. He has expressed his ambition to continue
promoting Indonesia overseas through his export of paper and
cooking oil. (13)
