'Either Us or Israel'? Secret US Military Commander's Letter Reveals Washington's Defence Dilemma
Amidst efforts by United States warships to intercept missiles launched from Iran towards Israel, serious warnings have emerged from within the US military regarding the increasing burden placed upon Washington. A senior American military commander has reportedly warned that the limited number of available warships could diminish the United States’ ability to continue protecting Israel from ballistic missile attacks. Under certain conditions, Washington may even have to prioritise its own territorial defence over assisting its close ally.
As reported by Al Jazeera on Sunday (2/8/202<0xA0>26), The Washington Post, citing several American officials speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that the Commander of United States European Command (EUCOM), General Alexus Grynkewich, sent a secret warning letter to high-ranking Pentagon officials. In the letter, Grynkewich stated that he might be forced to prioritise the protection of United States territory over the defence of Israel if his command does not immediately receive an additional Navy destroyer.
A US defence official stated that the warning letter is consistent with common practice among military commanders when they identify strategic risks requiring direct decisions or intervention from Washington. According to the official, competition between military commands for limited resources and weaponry is a frequent occurrence. To date, the Pentagon has declined to comment on the report. United States European Command has also not responded to requests for clarification, while Israeli authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the warning.
