Eight North Sulawesi regions remain on tsunami alert

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that several regencies and cities in North Sulawesi are currently under tsunami early warning alert status.

“We hope that residents continue to adhere to recommendations from local governments, particularly regional disaster management agencies,” said Ricky Daniel Aror, Coordinator of Data and Information at the Bitung Maritime Station, when contacted in Manado on Monday.

The alert status covers the northern parts of Minahasa Regency, the northern parts of South Minahasa Regency, Bitung City, and the northern parts of Bolaang Mongondow Regency. Meanwhile, the ‘caution’ category includes East Bolaang Mongondow Regency, South Bolaang Mongondow Regency, and the northern parts of South Minahasa Regency.

Previously, on Monday, 8 June 2026, at 06:37:42 WIB, the South Mindanao coast in the Philippines was struck by a tectonic earthquake. BMKG analysis shows the updated parameters for this earthquake indicate a magnitude of M7.7. The epicentre of the earthquake was located at coordinates 5.80° N; 120.14° E, specifically in the sea at a distance of 244 kilometres northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 47 kilometres.
