The Transportation Department of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) estimates approximately eight million people will enter and exit the Yogyakarta region during the Lebaran 2026 migration period. This figure represents the estimated mobility of people across all districts and cities in Yogyakarta during the Lebaran holiday period.

“Roughly around eight million mobility figures across DIY, covering all districts and cities,” said Chrestina Erni Widyastuti, Head of the Yogyakarta Transportation Department, when contacted in Yogyakarta on Thursday, 26 February 2026.

Chrestina explained that the estimate is based on patterns of people’s movement at several major entry routes to the Yogyakarta region, including the Prambanan area, Godean Road, Wates Road, and alternative routes commonly used by holiday migrants.

Information regarding these alternative routes, she said, will be disseminated again to the public to assist in facilitating smooth migration traffic flow.

According to her, the mobility pattern during Lebaran 2026 is estimated to be not significantly different from the pattern during the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year holiday period, which was considered to have run quite well.

Based on that evaluation, congestion is actually expected to occur in Tempel District, Sleman Regency, rather than in the toll access area on the eastern side of Yogyakarta.

“The congestion is actually in the Tempel area. During the Christmas and New Year period, we expected it at Prambanan, but we were wrong. Because toll fees are relatively expensive, people tend not to use the toll road,” she said.

To anticipate traffic congestion during the Lebaran migration and return period, the Yogyakarta Transportation Department will coordinate with the police and relevant stakeholders.

One of the measures being prepared is the adjustment of traffic management arrangements, including extending the duration of traffic lights at intersections with potential high congestion.

Additionally, vehicle flow monitoring will be conducted through the Smart Province “back office” system, which is integrated with the Yogyakarta Regional Police headquarters.

“We will work together with the police and other stakeholders to implement traffic management. The duration of traffic lights at intersections with high congestion will also be extended,” said Chrestina.
