Eight die in accident

SURABAYA, East Java: Eight students of Sambeng junior high school, Lamongan regency died and 30 other people were injured when their bus was hit early yesterday by a cargo train bound for Semarang, Central Java.

Antara quoted the Perumka railway company's spokesman, Sudaryono, as saying that the collision took place in the Jl. Pahlawan crossing, Lamongan. Police are still investigating the case.

The 40-coach train, driven by Mulyanto, was running 45 km per hour when it hit and threw the Putra Jaya passenger bus some five meters from the crossing.

The train was delayed for only 40 minutes and resumed its trip afterwards. The dead were all passengers of the bus, driven by Triono. (swe)
