Eiger Nature Integrates Ecotourism and Conservation
The development of tourism areas in the Puncak region must account for ecological functions and environmental carrying capacity, particularly when adjacent to conservation areas. This consideration is a key aspect of the development of Eiger Nature in Bogor, West Java, which integrates ecotourism activities with environmental and area management.
Eiger Nature is an evolution of Eiger Adventure Land located in the Puncak area. Ahead of its public opening, the management of the area covers land within PTPN I Regional 2 and the Utilisation Zone of the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP).
The area within the TNGGP Utilisation Zone covers 253.66 hectares. Its utilisation follows the Decree of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number SK.305/Menlhk/Setjen/KSA.3/4/2019 regarding the Business Permit for the Provision of Nature Tourism Facilities (IUPSWA) within the TNGGP Utilisation Zone.
Prior to the issuance of permits, studies were conducted regarding the area’s carrying capacity and the preparation of utilisation plans, taking into account the ecological functions and native habitats of the location.
According to company data, the Building Coverage Ratio (KDB) within the Eiger Nature area in the TNGGP zone is currently 0.15 per cent. Meanwhile, the regulations for area utilisation for IUPSWA holders allow for a maximum development of 10 per cent of the permitted area.
The President Director of Eiger Nature, Imanuel Wirajaya, stated that the name change from Eiger Adventure Land to Eiger Nature relates to an adjustment in the area’s management concept. “This change is not merely about the name, but about our commitment to building ecotourism that can be a blessing for visitors, nature, culture, and the community. We want those who visit to not only enjoy nature but also return with new experiences, understanding, and meaning,” Imanuel said on Tuesday (8/9/2026).
Another area managed for ecotourism activities is located on 73.23 hectares of PTPN I Regional 2 land. The KDB in this area is recorded at 3.64 per cent, while the company noted that more than 90 per cent of the land remains green space consisting of trees, shrubs, and bushes.
In this area, the company also recorded the planting of more than 120,000 trees and approximately 8 million shrubs and groundcover plants. Additionally, biodiversity mapping is being conducted in the TNGGP Utilisation Zone, alongside water and environmental management.
From an administrative perspective, the area’s development has undergone several licensing processes and approval documents since 2018. These include spatial planning permits, environmental approvals, site plan endorsements, and building permits.
Regarding environmental approval, issued documents include the UKL-UPL recommendation from the Bogor Regency Environmental Agency, revisions to the UKL-UPL, and the Environmental Impact Assessment Document (DELH) Decree Number 600.4.5/46/Kpts-KL/TL-DLH/2025 dated 2 December 2025.
In the process of area arrangement, the Decree of the Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Management Agency Number 2089 of 2025 regarding the Revocation of Sanctions was issued on 22 November 2025. This decision followed administrative efforts by PT Eigerindo MPI and subsequent field verification and government directives.
This document serves as one of the considerations in the area’s arrangement process before Eiger Nature opens to the public. The government is also considering PT Eigerindo MPI’s efforts to follow central and regional government directives in restoring degraded land through an ecotourism approach and its impact on local communities.
In developing the area’s concept, Eiger Nature utilises the ‘7E Ecotourism’ approach: Ecology, Ethnology, Economy, Education, Aesthetics, Ethics, and Entertainment. This approach encompasses environmental, cultural, economic, educational, and tourism activity aspects.
Eiger Nature stated it will open communication channels with environmental stakeholders and provide information regarding environmental management to visitors.
The development of tourism areas in Puncak will proceed alongside the need to maintain environmental functions and meet area utilisation regulations. Therefore, the implementation of environmental management once the area is operational will be a crucial factor in determining the sustainability of tourism activities in the region.
