Eid in Sumatra: President Prabowo to Join Takbiran in Medan and Eid Prayers in Aceh

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, is scheduled to depart for Sumatra to celebrate Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026 CE.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that the President will participate in the takbiran night activities in Medan, North Sumatra.

Teddy explained that after Medan, Prabowo will continue his journey to Aceh to perform Eid al-Fitr prayers together with the local community.

“Yes, that’s correct; the President will join the takbiran night in North Sumatra. Insha’Allah, (President Prabowo) will perform Eid al-Fitr prayers in Aceh tomorrow morning,” said Teddy in his statement on Friday (20/3/2026).

The government itself has determined that 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah or Eid al-Fitr 2026 falls on Saturday, 21 March 2026. This decision was taken through the isbat session held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), considering the results of crescent moon monitoring in various regions.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar conveyed that the results of the crescent moon monitoring serve as the primary basis for determining 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah.

This determination is based on astronomical calculations (hisab) as well as crescent moon sightings (rukyatul hilal) from hundreds of points across Indonesia.

“It has been agreed that 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah falls on Saturday, 21 March 2026,” said Nasaruddin during the isbat session press conference at the Auditorium HM Rasjidi, Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs RI, Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (19/3/2026) night.

With this determination, all Muslims in Indonesia will celebrate Eid al-Fitr simultaneously on Saturday morning.

The President’s presence in North Sumatra and Aceh during this Eid occasion is also viewed as a form of attention from the central government towards the regions on Sumatra island.

Strict security has been prepared at the points of the President’s visits to ensure all series of activities run smoothly.
